Orthodontic treatment is an investment that practices delayed gratification. Wearing braces can take years in some cases, so patience is necessary. According to KidsHealth, the average length of time someone will need braces is two years, but it can, of course, go longer. It is often recommended that children get braces early, sometimes as young as age seven. Here are a few reasons why being proactive about orthodontic care is vital.
Children are more likely to see others their age with braces in middle school and high school than they are when they get to college. This can help students be confident about their orthodontic journeys and relate to other students going through the same thing. They may even be more confident as they progress through their teenage years knowing and seeing that they invested a great deal of time into improving their smile. It also allows for self-expression through rubber bands and spacer colors, which can be changed throughout treatment.
When children get in the habit of tending to their braces, expanders, or retainers daily or nightly, they are building life skills. Taking time for themselves each night may also reduce stress and improve sleep, as well as help them tend to their teeth’s cleanliness. Cleaning removable braces, and cleaning teeth so the aligners work properly, also translates to better overall hygiene.
Invisalign aligners and lingual braces are both less visible options. The former are clear trays that can be removed during brushing and meals, the latter installed behind the teeth beneath the tongue. These braces can also add to someone’s confidence, as they do not show up in photographs, whether for the yearbook or at home with the family. Invisalign can teach children lessons in responsibility, as they have to keep track of their aligners and how often they are wearing them.
