Springtime is here! This time of year, many families will be going on vacation. However, that doesn’t mean that you can take a vacation from orthodontic treatment. If you have braces, there are certain steps that you can take to ensure your orthodontic treatment stays on track while you’re away.
Many travel-friendly snacks won’t be good options for someone with braces. Foods like popcorn and granola bars will be too sticky or crunchy and risk damaging your braces. Orthodontists advise that, when possible, you avoid eating chewy, hard, and sticky foods. While this may feel limiting, there are definitely still options for braces-wearers. String cheese, bananas, sandwiches with deli meat, and pudding are all suitable options to be considered. Keep this in mind when ordering food at restaurants, as well.
When you are packing for vacation, be sure to remember to pack the items required to keep your braces in good condition. You don’t want to arrive at your destination only to discover that you cannot properly clean or maintain your braces. Consider creating a list prior to packing to ensure that you remember the necessary items.
Your toothbrush and toothpaste should be your number one priority. Next, pack items that will aid you in cleaning all the nooks and crannies between your brackets, wires, and teeth. This could include a water pick, floss picks, floss threaders, mouthwash, and more. If you have rubber bands, be sure to pack those, as well.
Prior to your journey, stay on top of your orthodontic treatment by scheduling an appointment with your orthodontic specialists. If you need to reschedule an appointment to accommodate your trip, do so well in advance. If you break a bracket while on your vacation, call immediately to schedule an emergency appointment for when you return. When you know your appointments with your orthodontists are set, you can begin your trip with peace of mind.
