What Types of Braces are Right for Your Lifestyle?

Nearly four million people in the United States are currently wearing braces, with 75% of them being younger than 18. While teens make up the majority of patients using braces, it is becoming more common for adults to undergo the treatment as well. Especially with near-invisible options, such as Invisalign or lingual braces, making the process much more discreet.

However, when considering what type of treatment is best for you, or your teen, there are some considerations to keep in mind. For instance, while clear aligners might sound perfect for less noticeable treatment, they may not be right for every type of lifestyle. To help you understand your options better, here is what you need to know.

Invisalign and Clear Aligners

Starting off with one of the most popular options, it can be easy to assume that Invisalign is right for anyone. However, for younger patients or those with busy lifestyles, Invisalign may not be the best choice. You need to wear them for at least 22 hours every day, take them out before eating or drinking, and rinse them thoroughly before putting them back in. This means that aligners can be a handful for people on the go. Similarly, younger kids could fall into a habit of forgetting to wear them long enough, or even losing them if they’re taking them out too frequently.

Clear aligners may also not be recommended by your orthodontist if the corrections you need are too severe, as the aligners won’t be able to fix the problem as well as traditional braces. While you should always listen to your orthodontist’s advice first and foremost when it comes to your personal lifestyle, it’s worth considering how clear aligners would work for you. If you know you or your teen won’t have time to properly adhere to the treatment, it may be worth considering other options.

Metal Braces and Ceramic Braces

Standard metal braces are by far the most common image we imagine when thinking of braces. They are also some of the best for correcting more severe cases. While you won’t have to worry about removing them, you will have to look after them daily and stay away from eating sticky or overly chewy foods. This trade-off can seem steep; however, for those with busier lifestyles, it can be worth considering.
Ceramic braces use the same system of wires and brackets as metal braces, however, they are composed of materials that allow them to blend in with your teeth. This makes them a lot less noticeable and a more popular choice for older teens and adults. While not 100% invisible, they’re much less detectable and can help prevent self-consciousness.

Lingual Braces

Lingual braces are another form of treatment similar to traditional braces. However, unlike standard braces, these are placed along the backs of teeth making them undetectable when you smile. This can give you the discreet look of clear aligners without the unique lifestyle changes. While you will still have to stay clear of sticky foods, lingual braces are something to ask your orthodontist about if you’re hesitant about the look of traditional braces.

Which Option is the Best?

While one option is not superior to the other, the type you decide on should be based on your personal lifestyle and what is needed for proper treatment. For instance, while Invisalign might work with your lifestyle, it may not be right for the type of treatment you need to be done. In this case, it’s worth considering other discreet options that will work better. While all options with come with their own special care requirements, it’s important to keep in mind that the lifestyle changes aren’t permanent. Once treatment is done you can start enjoying your newly straightened smile and of the benefits that come along with it.
