Why Are There White Spots On My Teeth After Braces?

Braces are a great option for improving your smile and correcting any orthodontic problem like an overbite, crossbite, or underbite. Clear aligners may be a better option than traditional braces for several reasons.

Patients with traditional metal braces have discovered that this orthodontic correction can leave some marks behind. It’s not uncommon for many people to experience white spots on their teeth once the braces have been removed. These decalcification marks can be a bit of a surprise when the orthodontist removes your braces. But why do they develop in the first place?

What Are These White “Spots” On My Teeth?

White spots can form beneath the parts of metal braces that are attached to the teeth. These are known as decalcification marks. Plaque (the same stuff that causes cavities) can build up to where the braces are attached to the teeth. Because you cannot clean beneath the location where the braces are attached, the plaque creates blemishes on the teeth. Keep in mind that braces do not cause these spots on their own, but they do help in facilitating the formation.

The average brace wearer will wear braces for about two years (give or take a few months). That is a long time for plaque to do some damage to the teeth. Clear aligners, unlike traditional braces, can be removed regularly for cleaning which means the plaque does not have an opportunity to build up in the first place. This is something to keep in mind when considering Invisalign clear aligners.

These white lesions most often form between the gum and the braces. Many teens and adults choose to reduce the risk of these lesions forming by choosing clear braces that can be removed to make it easier to keep the teeth free of plaque.

Treating the White Spots

Luckily, these white spots do not cause permanent damage to the teeth. Most spots will disappear on their own with time. There are also treatments available that will help to move them along more quickly. Many teen and adult patients, on the other hand, choose clear aligners to avoid having to deal with it.

Avoiding this potential problem is the best way to not have to worry about further treatments to rid the problem. You and your orthodontist can make the decision together about whether clear aligners or traditional braces are best to treat your individual health concerns.
