Why Summer Is The Best Time To Get Braces

The dog days of summer are here! Your family is enjoying the warmer weather, spending lots of time outside and plenty of time relaxing. While you’re soaking up the sun and enjoying the hazy, lazy summer days, your child’s oral health is likely the last thing on your mind. But, summer is actually the best time for your child to see an orthodontist about getting braces. Here’s why:

More Free Time

In the summer months, when there are fewer events on your calendar, it’s easier to schedule an appointment with an orthodontic practice. You won’t have to worry about fitting the appointment around school, sports practices, or other extracurricular activities. Your child’s first appointment at the orthodontist will be longer than usual and include things like:

• A review of their medical history
• Filling out paperwork
• An oral exam with x-rays
• A consultation about treatment options, like metal braces or Invisalign
• An explanation of financing options and insurance coverage
• A customized treatment plan and scheduling another appointment to begin treatment

The orthodontist will also answer any questions you and your child may have. It will be much easier to fit this longer initial treatment into your schedule during the summer when you have extra free time!

Getting Into a Routine

The average length of time your child will have to wear braces is around 2 years. During this time, an important part of their orthodontic treatment is keeping up with regular checkups. This is so the orthodontist can make any adjustments and ensure that the braces treatment progresses as it should. In the summer months, having a more flexible schedule can help your child get used to this routine.

Time to Get Used to Their Braces

There will be an adjustment period no matter which orthodontic treatment your child has, whether it’s traditional metal braces, clear braces, or clear aligners. If they have Invisalign, they’ll need to get used to wearing the clear trays for 20-22 hours each day. With traditional braces, they’ll need to learn how to properly brush and floss around the metal brackets and adapt to food restrictions. This learning curve will be much easier to get through in the summer months when there’s no stress about homework, studying, or after-school activities.
