How to Be Confident About Your Braces
Posted on July 29, 2022
It’s not uncommon to feel initial anxiety after having braces applied to your teeth, especially if you are under the age of 18. According to Kids Health, 75% of the four million people currently wearing braces in the United States fall into this category. With a change as long-term as braces, it’s important to remind yourself why you began this process in the first place. Let’s take a look at some of the ways you can be confident about your braces.
Remind Yourself They Are Not Permanent
While the glue that orthodontic specialists use to attach braces to teeth may seem permanent, that is not the case. The orthodontist can easily remove this material from your teeth at the end of your treatment, but it’s vital that the braces stay firmly attached until that point. The time to remove your braces will eventually come and you will be able to finally reveal your newly-aligned teeth.
Track Your Progress
If you’re struggling to be patient during your braces journey, talk to your orthodontist about tracking your progress at each appointment. Since braces adjust your teeth gradually, you may not always notice a substantial difference overnight. You may be able to notice small changes in the mirror at home, but the orthodontist may have photographs or digital images of your teeth from before you began treatment. If you ask your orthodontic specialists to track the changes for you and show them to you as time passes, it could give you the motivation to finish the treatment strongly.
Think of the Future
It can be easy to lose sight of the reason you got braces in the first place. While it may feel strange to have braces at first, it’s extremely likely that other people at school will have them as well. Remember that your braces are designed to provide you with straight teeth that you can smile with for the rest of your life. Stains won’t be as prominent because straighter teeth are easier to floss and brush. You may feel more confident once you see your straight teeth in the mirror, but there’s no reason you can’t be confident about yourself for making the investment in the first place.
